Building a chicken coop gives you complete flexibility which allows you to customise key elements to suit yours and your chickens needs. Ultimately you would want to source your designs from a reputable source but there are certain factors that will still need to be taken into consideration. Try and think of aesthetics in regard to your chicken house location after all you do not want to upset any neighbours if you have any by having an unpleasant looking or wrongly located coop that could possibly devalue property or put off potential buyers etc. Keep your coops appeal by maintaining its surrounding borders so it blends into the landscape and not stands out why not think of a nice colour scheme for the roof etc where possible.
Chickens can be let out from the main door or sometimes a smaller door is included in a small chicken coop that can be opened to let the chickens out. Small Chicken Coops will usually not contain the kinds of additional equipment that is found in larger coops; for the most part a small chicken coop is a very utilitarian structure that involves a lot of manual intervention on the part of the breeder. A small chicken coop should be kept simple in order to focus on the raising of healthy happy chickens that have a high egg output. Removing all of the additional contraptions from a small chicken coop settles the chickens and keeps them more comfortable. As coops increase in size the quality of housing for the chickens within tends to decrease making a small chicken coop that much more attractive for the small breeder.
Building a chicken coop will also involve creating good coop insulation that will keep the chicken warm and comfortable during winter season. It is also beneficial during summer as well. It suggested that a 1.5 inch of Styrofoam sheet placed between the ceilings and the walls is ideal. Painting the walls with white paint also helps reflect the summer heat. Some prefer using aluminum roof while tall plants just around the coop will provide better shade for the coop. The flooring of the chicken coop may be of different building materials. Packing down plain dirt to create a solid foundation is the cheapest flooring for a chicken coop. It is however most vulnerable to rodents digging from underground to get to their prey.
