Chicken Coop / May 27, 2018 / Maryellen
A chicken coop is a kind of enclosure in which the chickens are kept. The interior of the housing have nest boxes for the chickens to lay eggs and also has perches for the birds to sleep on. The inside and outside of a chicken coops is usually covered with material such as straw or wood chips. These collect the chicken waste making it easier to clean. A chicken coop would usually have enough ventilation for air circulation helping airing out any odors that may occur. Before you get on to constructing a chickens coop sketch out the design of the kind of coop you need. It is not only the construction that you need to chalk out but also the colors that you are going to use on the roof and walls of your chicken coop. The coop should not act as a distraction to your neighborhood if it is clearly visible to your neighbors or be a defacement of the surroundings where you live. Therefore your chicken coop should have an aesthetic design and have no complaints from your neighbors.
Furthermore the coop should have sliding windows to prevent the chickens inside of it from roosting on the windows and the floor should be sloped in the direction of the door to ensure easy cleaning as well as to make it easier for rainwater to flow out of the coop. Ensuring that the coop is protected from environmental factors is rather critical when building a chicken coop as well. This means that the chickens inside of the coop need to be offered protection from bad weather predators and people looking to steal them. To accomplish all of these elements the coop needs to be placed in a high area and be well drained. It also must absolutely have exposure to the sun to ensure a warm and dry environment for the chickens and strong mesh wire needs to be placed around it to keep predators such as cats and foxes out.
Be sure to replace the water and the chicken feed daily. Build your chicken coop facing the south so that the coop will receive sunlight throughout the day. For the winter months when the days are shorter and there is less sunlight it is important to install a light in the coop. This is not difficult. They have lights that you can just stick to the walls at any local hardware store you do not have to be an electrician it is as easy as putting a sticker on a paper.Installing this light will be well worth the few dollars you spend to do it. It will keep your chickens warm and happy and keep your egg production up in the winter when most chicken farmers experience a fall off of production because the chickens get less light and warmth.
