Why do you choose chicken? Basically, raising chickens is very cheap rather than petting dog in your house. The foods are cheap, lots of options for its shelter, no need for pet care, and if you can make it the backyard chicken then it will be much more inexpensive. Backyard chickens are sometimes called as urban chickens. Thus, you will have an urban chicken coop just like a backyard with certain characteristic. Urban chicken is good source of food, providing bunch of healthy eggs, but when they are mature enough, their production of eggs will be decreased.
Since those chickens are easier to manage, you need to set anything right. First, you should figure out how many chickens you want to have so you will know the room size you should provide. Every chicken can be raised on the backyard but only some of them could reach their highest potential such as Rhode Island Red, Wyandotte, Ameraucana, and Orpington.
